What to Do After Hail Damages Your Roof in Pueblo & Colorado Springs

Living along Colorado's Front Range means living with hail. From spring through late summer, storms can roll through Pueblo, Pueblo West, Colorado Springs, and Fountain with little warning, and even a few minutes of hail can do serious damage to a roof. The problem is that much of that damage isn't visible from the ground.

If a storm just passed through your neighborhood, here's what to do next.

1. Make Sure Everyone Is Safe

Before anything else, check for immediate hazards. Watch for downed power lines, broken windows, and leaks inside your home. If water is coming through the ceiling, move valuables and place buckets or towels to limit the damage. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Wet, damaged shingles are slippery and dangerous.

2. Look for Signs of Damage From the Ground

You don't need a ladder to spot common warning signs. Walk around your home and look for:

  • Dents on gutters, downspouts, and vents. If metal took a hit, your shingles likely did too.

  • Granules in gutters or at the bottom of downspouts. Hail knocks the protective granules off asphalt shingles.

  • Cracked, missing, or broken shingles you can see from the yard.

  • Damage to siding, window screens, or outdoor furniture.

  • Dented cars or mailboxes on your street. A sign the hail was large enough to damage roofs.

Take photos of anything you find, along with the date. If you can safely do so, save photos of the hailstones themselves next to a coin or ruler for scale.

3. Get a Professional Roof Inspection

Hail damage often hides in plain sight. Bruised shingles, cracked mats, and damaged flashing can look fine from the ground but lead to leaks months later. A professional inspection is the only way to know for sure.

At Colorado Front Range Roofing, our roof inspections are free. We document every sign of damage with photos, so you have a clear record for your insurance company, whether we find significant damage or none at all.

4. Contact Your Insurance Company

If your inspection confirms hail damage, contact your homeowners insurance company to start a claim. Check your policy for deadlines, and don't wait. The sooner you file, the easier it is to connect the damage to a specific storm.

When the insurance adjuster comes to inspect your roof, it helps to have your roofing contractor there too. An experienced roofer can point out damage the adjuster may miss and make sure everything is documented. Our team offers insurance claim assistance and works with homeowners through every step of the process.

5. Watch Out for Storm Chasers

After big hail storms, out-of-state contractors often flood Colorado neighborhoods, knocking on doors and promising quick, cheap roof replacements. Some do poor work, and many are gone before problems show up.

Protect yourself by choosing a roofer who:

  • Is local, with a real address and a long history in your area

  • Is licensed and insured

  • Has strong, recent reviews from your neighbors

  • Is certified by major manufacturers like GAF

  • Gives you a written contract and doesn't pressure you to sign on the spot

One more red flag: Colorado law prohibits roofing contractors from offering to pay or waive your insurance deductible. If a contractor offers to "cover your deductible," walk away.

6. Protect Your Home Until Repairs Are Done

If your roof is leaking, a reputable roofer can provide temporary protection, like tarping, to prevent further damage while your claim is processed. Keep receipts for any emergency repairs, since your insurance policy may cover them.
